BOY SCOUTING
Boy Scouting, one of the traditional membership divisions of the BSA, is available to boys who have earned the Arrow of Light Award and are at least 10 years old or have completed the fifth grade and are at least 10, or who are 11, but not yet 18 years old. The program achieves the BSA's objectives of developing character, citizenship, and personal fitness.

Advancement Changes effective January 1, 2008

Co-Coordinator: Chris Brisack

Duties:

  1. Encourage scouts to advance in rank.

  2. Work with the troop scribe to maintain all Scout advancement records.

  3. Arrange quarterly troop courts of honor and monthly boards of review.

  4. Develop and maintain a merit badge counselor list.

  5. Make a prompt report on the correct form to the council service center when a troop board of review is held.  Secure badges and certificates.

  6. Work with the troop librarian to build and maintain a troop library of merit badge pamphlets and other advancement literature.

  7. Report to the troop committee at each meeting.

 

New Boy Scout Rank Requirements (Effective January 1, 2008)


The following changes to Boy Scout rank requirements were approved and will become effective January 1, 2008. These changes will help advance the importance of Youth Protection training beyond initial Boy Scout joining requirements, and keep youth informed and actively engaged in understanding the key elements of personal safety and protection. NOTE: These changes will be published in the 2008 Boy Scout Requirements book and the 11th edition of The Boy Scout Handbook.


Tenderfoot Rank
Revised requirement 9:

Explain the importance of the buddy system as it relates to your personal safety on outings and in your neighborhood. Describe what a bully is and how you should respond to one.


Second Class Rank
New requirement 8b:

Explain the three R's of personal safety and protection.


First Class Rank
New requirement 12:

Describe the three things you should avoid doing related to use of the Internet. Describe a cyber-bully and how you should respond to one.

Board of Review Request Form

Remember the following for your Board of Review:

Be absolutely sure that all the requirements for the rank have been met, including the right number  and type of merit badges, troop activity participation, service project hours, etc..  Complete all sections of your scout handbook and bring it to your SMC and BOR.

 

bullet

Complete your scoutmaster conference (SMC) prior to the BOR. Contact a scoutmaster to set up a time.

 

bullet

Review the requirements of the rank and be prepared to discuss them. Be prepared to discuss the merit badges earned for the rank.

 

bullet

Review the Scout Oath, Scout Law, and Outdoor Code and understand their meaning.

 

bullet

Wear your full scout uniform, including belt, socks, neckerchief and slide.
